Once again, I found the RISE process to be a valuable one in terms of developing my teaching practice.
This time around I was able to engage in effective dialogue with Jessie about our PL goals. (Last term I was unfortunately sick!) It was great to chat with Jessie around the authentic teaching of guided reading in our classrooms as (up until this stage) we had not spent a whole lot of time discussing pedagogy with one another.
Worth mentioning - we were able to feed our focus well during the session as we have similar goals
Upon evaluation of the goal that I set last term, it was clear that my goal needs to be adjusted from 'at the end of term 2...' to 'throughout the year'. Developing my own capacity to deepen student understanding of complex texts through questioning will remain my long term goal for the year as I believe there is a plethora of professional reading that needs to be explored. (Feel free to link some for me in the comments!)
Jessie and I discussed some practical strategies for guided reading that I am eager to implement ASAP.
I had some concerns around 'wasting time' waiting for Ss to read a particular excerpt from a text. We discussed that by providing students with the text during DEAR time will allow them to create their own individual meaning from the text (and eventually develop and answer each others questions) before meeting with the teacher. This will (long term) support the second part of my goal which is developing learner agency in the explicit teaching of reading skills and strategies. In terms of affirmations from the lesson I was pleased with the level of student engagement in my group and I provided students with enough time to think and ponder the questions before answering them.
Thanks Jessie for the collaborative dialogue!
