RISE Term 3
The introduction of Quest / Launch tasks in year 2 changed my focus for RISE this term. I was initially going to look at feedback and questioning during maths but I felt the need to get my head around the whole Quest / Launch task process before I looked at parts of it at a deeper level.
So the focus for this term was feedback during writing sessions and how I can get the students to focus on achieving their writing goals.
A strategy I am going to start implementing is the students actually getting their goal off the display and bringing it to me before we look at their writing. Then engaging in immediate and effective feedback with their goal right there in front of them. Simple, I know. But hopefully this will help them remember and focus on achieving it and moving on to other goals. I am also interested in ensuring that my feedback to the students was immediate, effective and related to their individual goals. Initially they were all given goals centred around improving punctuation. Once they achieve these then we will move on to other goals which are decided together during these frequent and individual writing feedback discussions. I have found that these discussions don’t have to be long. With the students full attention they can be really focused on one or two small things that are going to make a difference in their writing. The whole process is cumulative and progresses throughout the year so small steps is the way to go.
Next term I am going to continue focusing on looking at the students individual writing and giving feedback to them with their writing goal with us. I would like to look at the Quest Launch task process next year. This is still very new to year 2 so it is a steep learning curve for all of us. Hopefully by next year I will feel confident enough with it to look deeper into the process and analyse how it is going and how I can make it more effective.
