So in Term 3 we ROSE again - and it was a very positive and reassuring experience. The initial thoughts of what do I sound like and what do I look like had disappeared and Peta and I focused easily on the task at hand. Peta has been a fantastic partner for RISE - positive, constructive and someone who I trust completely to be honest and encouraging. It has been the perfect pairing as we are both experienced teachers but completely new to this process.
Upon reflection of this terms video, I had changed my approach completely and was able to say that I had met my goal of becoming less Kindergarten. My timing was faster, the children were pushed to read and respond at a more challenging level and I felt that I was not explaining things repeatedly but rather once or twice and then moving on. It seemed a more engaging lesson and the children were more on task and responding to this in a positive way.
I have enjoyed the process of critiquing myself and being able to watch the video a few times has been helpful. An effective teacher is one that is always able to look at themselves with a view to improve - we are always evolving and the dynamic nature of teaching demands that we do. We cannot do things just because "we have done it this way for 20 years."
My new goal for next term will be to focus on my questioning during guided reading and improve the way I address the "after reading" part of guided reading. I am always questioning myself about this and hoping that I am able to develop the children's understanding and comprehension of texts in order to meet their individual needs. There are a few resources that I have collected during these past 3 terms that I will be looking at using and implementing in order to meet this goal in the future.
