I was glad I began looking at my goal during the latter stages of the Geography unit as Term 3 has been tricky with Year 6 due to students having other commitments of a Wednesday. Nonetheless I feel I have a better handle on student led feedback as well as how they felt their own learning had developed through the delivery of the content. I have been lucky enough to be able to see this in action during our writing sessions. I think I also altered my idea to make sure I am more specific with the learning intention and success criteria.
During History Part 1 (Federation) I was able to have the students break into three groups and take one question each and then rotate. The students looked at what they had learned, what activities were successful and what they would change. It gave them the opportunity to talk amongst each other and critique the unit thus far. I found this very valuable. Another component of my goal was to use learning intentions and success criteria to help the students critique their own as well as other’s work. I have linked this with the history and it was interesting to compare this to the feedback they provide during writing. I think it is certainly something that I could do more of as they were looking for ‘writing’ not ‘history’ criteria even though the success criteria was on the slide.
We think a good way forward may be to give them an example of a history text and use the success criteria to give feedback in terms related to this key learning area. It may also be better for them to have the success criteria in front of them rather than on the screen. This might take the form of a checklist and then have the students add the two stars and a wish at the bottom. This way the feedback can be kept and used to guide their history learning.
Moving forward I would like to work on the following goal:
I would like to work on making sure the success criteria is succinct and pertinent. Sometimes there is too much for them to take on board. I also think I need to give them criteria in the form of a grid with space to tick whilst they are working rather than just on the slides. This way they have a real focus whilst working.
