Today I met with my new RISE partner, Tayla we had a great discussion on both our videos of practice. Tayla's video was focused upon her Phonics program, working with a small group. It is always insightful to see another teacher's practice, especially one on a different stage.
My video of practice was on a combined guided reading and writing lesson focusing upon the text 'The Day the Crayons Quit' looking at the persuasive devices within the text. Tayla offered some insightful feedback on both my strengths and weaknesses within the lesson.
My identified strengths within the lesson was my ability to extend my students questioning beyond the text and making the writing brainstorm component accessible for all students within the group. I thoroughly enjoyed combining both reading and writing elements together within this lesson, as I feel it was a purposeful and authentic process when looking at persuasive texts.
My areas of improvement is to ensure all students are giving the opportunity to share and discuss their understandings, within my video I noticed one student who was eager to answer a question, however I missed this opportunity during the lesson. Therefore I need to ensure I provide students with adequate discussion and reflection time to allow all sure to learn from their peers. This is an area that I will begin to program into my guided reading lessons, with allocating time for students to ask each other text based questioning
I really enjoy R.I.S.E week, it is always a time for me to reflect on my own teaching as well as observe and learn from the brilliant teachers surrounding me.
