All I can say is Wow! Having never met with Tom Barrett, I went into the meeting, not knowing what to expect and being concerned over what from the curriculum I don’t know, compared to what I do know. However after spending five minutes in the room, I felt completing at ease, Tom, Jamie and Pat made what could of felt like an overwhelming experience for a new teacher, into an experience that I didn’t want to leave.
Through this session we were able to unpack the the English writing outcome EN2-7B - identifies and uses language forms and features in their own writing appropriate to a range of purposes, audiences and contexts. By unpacking this specific outcome Liv, Tess and myself were able to identify areas in which we are successfully teaching within our English program, in particular language forms and features. However through the unpacking of the outcome we concluded that we need to further develop our teaching on the ‘purpose, audience and contexts’ within a written text.
By breaking down the outcome on the cards, we were able to segment the individual importance of each word, allowing us to critically analyse each aspect of the outcome. As a visual learner I found this a successful strategy that I would like to incorporate into my teaching, as well as within our grade planning.
As a grade team, we left with a deeper understanding of our English curriculum and a practice in which we can further deepen our understanding. Hopefully we will have continued professional learning experiences with Tom in the future. A extremely worthwhile and valuable hour and a half.
