For my R.I.S.E Week Learning I focused on a whole class teaching lesson from my English writing program.
I believe I gave the students positive encouragement and feedback throughout the session. I also clarified the students understanding by revisiting content from previous lessons and repeating the students answers.
Some challenges I found during the session was that students were not engaged in the lesson and I delivered a large amount of content in one session. The students were very well behaved throughout but their level of interaction with myself and the content was not enough (need more engaging activities).
Learning based on challenges
From these challenges I have viewed during my R.I.S.E process I will now implement some of the strategies suggested from my R.I.S.E partner. Some suggestions involved getting students moving and discussing to engage them. I could do this by implementing a range of discussion activities. I could also involve students by handing a hard copy of the text to each student and then they discuss with their talking buddy. Another learning from my challenges was that some students need ‘think time’ to compose an answer and can’t just come up with one on the spot. Even though these strategies were given for my writing lesson, I do believe I could use them in many other KLA’s to make my lessons more engaging!
To increase student engagement during the explicit teaching of writing skills.
Future planning and practice
In the future I plan to implement a few of the partner discussion activities into my whole class instruction to engage students in what we are learning. I will also print out a paper copy of the text excerpt we are focusing on to give to students to direct their focus. Before I ask students to answer the questions I ask, I will give students “thinking time” to gather their thoughts and hopefully those students who don't usually place their hand up, will have an opportunity to do that.
Comment on the R.I.S.E process itself
The R.I.S.E process was very interesting and there was a lot of professional dialogue between us. I loved the amount of ideas that were tossed between Carly and I. I can’t wait to place all the great ideas from Carly into my future lessons.
