Bullying is a thing of the past when it comes to Friendology 101….. What is a friendologist … someone who is equipped with the right skills to be able to handle a “friendship fire” or someone being “mean on purpose”. As teachers we equip our students with the skills to be able to read, communicate in society and use Mathematics in their everyday lives, but what we sometimes forget is that students need to fundamental skills to be able to deal with friendships when something goes wrong. That is why the new program “Friendology 101” is an excellent skills based program which gives the students the tools to be able to deal with issues when they arise.
Studies show students that have positive relationships have a better wellbeing, work better academically, and suicide rates fall. This is definitely something to work towards as a school community.
Friendology 101 was developed by Dayna Burgess to help young girls and boys combat issues in their friendships. In this program students learn 4 key facts about friendships.
No friendship (relationship is perfect)
Every friendship is different
Trust and respect are the two most important qualities of a friendship
Friendships change … and that’s okay!
These are so imperative for students to understand as they move through their primary years and it is so important, for us as teachers, to able to guide students (with this program) through those difficult times and changes.
During this seminar Danya explained how it is important that we don’t say to students they need to be friends with everyone, as this becomes very unhealthy for the child. We need to make sure that all students are friendly and respectful to all students but they don’t have to be friends with everyone. Showing students the difference between these is so important.
The program speaks about “Friendship fires” and how to handle them. The visual cycle shows students how to handle a “friendship fire” and what to do when they occur. The whole cycle is based around trust and respect, which in turn allows students to maintain healthy relationships amongst all peers.
For me this program could change the mindset of students forever and allow them to open themselves to developing and maintaining healthy relationships for the rest of their lives.
Excited to start using this program at St Christopher's Panania! Bring on those healthy friendships!!
